Biologists
have finally managed to describe the crazy rasberry ants, ant type of
"rogue" who likes to live around power lines and potentially cause a
short circuit.
Rasberry ants were first discovered in Houston. Now, these ants are also found in the 21 regions the State of Texas as well as some areas of Mississippi and Louisiana. This animal is about 4-5 mm and has a reddish color.
Previously, biologists just managed to describe to the level of genus, the genus Nylanderia. Therefore, these ants only be named by its inventor, Tom Rasberry.
Is John LaPolla, taxonomists from Towson University in Maryland, who later studied ant species and identified. LaPolla Research published in the journal PLoS ONE on Wednesday (09/19/2012). The species was named Nylanderia fulva.
Identify successful after comparing N. fulva with other species in the same genus. LaPolla said the identification process is complex as N. fulva is very similar to the species N. Pudens. He later learned that there are differences in both males genitals.
"Some
of the jokes circulating among insect taxonomist is that we spend a lot
of time for this species mepelajari. And the answer is because
sometimes there are characteristics that help differentiate these
species," said LaPolla.
Giving a name is very important. Naming helps biologists determine the natural enemies that could control ants. Rasberry ants could potentially interfere shorted. In 2008, the Johnson Space Center in Houston to call an expert to help prevent the ants are moving toward computer equipment. Naming also help scientists understand the function of species within a habitat.
