UN camp in Gaza Attacked

GAZA - Last night 10 people attacked and damaged facilities of the United Nations that are used to hold a summer camp for children in the Gaza Strip, a UN spokesman said on Thursday (07/28/2011).

Chris Gunness, spokesman for the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which helps Palestinian refugees, said the facility in northwestern Gaza was attacked around midnight on Wednesday (07/27/2011) local time.

"The attackers have destroyed a large bulletin board, the UN flag burning, and burning a portion of the stage. There is no UN security personnel at the site of injury," Gunness said.

"We condemn this attack. We ask the government in Gaza to investigate and tell the people involved to account for his actions."

Fathi Hammad, Interior Minister in the Hamas government in Gaza, has promised "immediate commencement of an investigation to find the perpetrators of the attack".

The damage has been repaired and the children in that place on Thursday night made the world record for the largest number of kite flight simultaneously, said Gunness, who mentions "more than 13,000" in the air and beat the record of 10,465 made by China.

Year ago, masked gunmen had attacked the camp on two occasions, burning tents, chairs, tables, rocking horses, and other supplies.

The attack was blamed on Islamist militants who regarded the camp as a symbol of Western corruption because the children of men and women mingled freely. Hamas authorities in Gaza has not commented on the attack.

Palestinian Centre for Human Rights condemned the attack. They said the incident was the result of the state of security chaos and misuse of weapons in Gaza.

A statement by the rights group ask Hamas to "impose appropriate penalties and announce the results of the investigation".

Program "Summer Games" UNRWA serves about 250,000 children in the Gaza Strip in a six-week summer holiday.

Across the camp program, the children attempt to make the world record in many fields, including dribbling and scored the hand painting.
