Lewis Hamilton believes McLaren will still be part of a team within the next few years. This statement was presented to dampen speculation about the future of the 2008 world champion in Formula 1.
The newspaper reported that on weekends Hamilton could activate the clause in his contract to leave the team based in Woking at the end of this season if McLaren did not become world champion.
Nevertheless, Team Principal Martin Whitmarsh said that Hamilton is fully committed to survive. Because the British rider who since making his debut in F1 in 2007 has joined McLaren and love this team.
"Lewis loves this team and he knows the car has the ability to win many victories," Whitmarsh said in an interview with the Independent. "He sat with me here in the last 10 days and explain the taste, the enthusiasm, and his desire to remain a part of this team."
"I've known him since he was 11 years old. I do not think that he would look at me and said he did not mean it."
Whitmarsh also defended Hamilton, who recently received criticism regarding the ethics of driving, especially when brushed with its rivals in the GP of Monaco and Canada.
"A rider must be aggressive," he said. "If you're a Formula 1 car will overtake the others, you will take the risk."
Speaking of comments made by Niki Lauda and Emerson Fittipaldi, Whitmarsh said: "They are the ones who really is worth quoting his statement, and people like this (worth quoting) said to attract attention."
"I know Niki and liked it, and I accept that there are people around who want to say something to create controversy. Niki is in that category. You know, there is the famous meeting between Jackie Stewart and Ayrton Senna, which I think in the new film Senna , and that they basically have the same conversation. Ayrton's response was that he was there to race. "
"Now, if Lewis regret the accident? Of course he did, so well with me."
