Russia Bans Imports From Germany and Spain Vegetables

MOSCOW - The Russian government on Monday (30 / 5) officially banned the import of all the vegetables that come from Germany and Spain and also at the same time warning of sanctions in the near future that will be applied to other European countries because of danger of deadly E.coli bacteria.

Russian Consumer Protection Agency said the ban was imposed on raw vegetables, including tomatoes, cucumbers and salad all products from Germany and Spain.

"The ban was imposed due to the spread of acute intestinal infections in Germany caused by bacteria Enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC)," said one member of the Russian Consumer Protection Agency, as reported by AFP on Monday (30 / 5).

EHEC bacteria can cause hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) resulting pee blood and cause damage to the liver and can cause death.

The German government itself has found the death from the bacteria. Where, has become a cause of death of 12 people who probably came from organic cucumber imported from Spain.

Consumer Protection Agency said the size of the import ban could be extended to all European Union countries if Russia fail to find a scientific explanation of how the bacteria spreads.

"In the near future, the decision on banning or sell vegetables from all EU countries in Russia will be issued," said the Russian government.

Director of the Institute for Consumer Protection, Gennady Onishchenko has warned the Russian people only eat vegetables that are grown. Because, of all vegetables imported from Germany and Spain have been confiscated.

"We speak so that all the Russian people do not buy fresh vegetables from Germany and Spain. But, buy local products," said Onishchenko.
