WASHINGTON - United States (U.S.) will not participate in the UN summit on racism III Durban this September, which will commemorate 10 years since the Durban Conference Declaration 2001 which controversially, officials said on Friday (03/06/2011) .
"We will not participate in the commemoration of Durban that. In December, we decided against a resolution to hold a memorial because we believe that the Durban process includes exhibits intolerance and anti-Semitism and we do not want to see it celebrated," said State Department spokesman Mark Toner . The government of President Barack Obama has told members of parliament about the decision earlier this week, following Canada and Israel in boycotting the event.
Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Republican leaders in the House Foreign Affairs Commission of the United States, expressed "satisfaction" with the decision. He said he would be "like its predecessor ... there is no doubt (the summit) would be hijacked by the extremists and turned into a celebration of anti-Western hatred, anti-Israel, anti-Semitic."
That attitude is supported by two political parties, with Democratic senators Kirsten Gillibrand said, is "an insult to the Americans that the United Nations decided to convene the Durban conference in New York III, only a few days of the 10 anniversary of the September 11 attacks."
"We all have witnessed how the sound extreme anti-Semitic and anti-American taking over Durban Durban I and II and we can expect the same thing will happen in Durban III," he said.
Israel follow the U.S. in opposing the UN General Assembly resolution in December to hold a follow-up the World Conference Against Racism in 2001 in the city of Durban, South Africa. The resolution was passed with 104 votes versus 22, with 33 abstentions. Conference 2001 has been marked by bitter disputes and walkout because of a plan that included criticism of Zionism in the declaration at last. Israel and the U.S. walkout action by complaining about anti-Semitism.
Nine government-including Canada, USA, Australia, Israel, Germany, and
Britain-have been boycotting the talks Durban II in Geneva last year because of fears of anti-Semitism.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has used the conference as a platform to launch harsh attacks against Israel.
